Fuad Pashayev, Chief of the UNESCO Office and Representative to Pakistan, along with Mr. Aurangzaib Khan Khichi, Federal Minister for National Heritage and Culture Division, and Mr. Asad Rehman Gillani, Federal Secretary, Ms. Syeda Tanzeela Sahabat Director General Department of Archaeology and Museums visited the historic Mai Qamro Mosque and the Tomb of Sultan Muqarab Khan at Bagh Jogian, Islamabad. The visit was aimed at highlighting the historical, architectural and cultural significance of these important heritage monuments, both of which have been included in Pakistan’s Tentative List of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Upon arrival, the distinguished delegation was warmly received by Ms. Tanzeela Sabahat, Director General, Department of Archaeology & Museums (DoAM) / Joint Secretary (NCHD). The delegation was subsequently briefed on the historical background, architectural characteristics and heritage significance of the monuments, with particular emphasis on their importance within the cultural landscape of the Islamabad region. Capt.R Faiz Akhar, Raja Mobeen Akhtar and Raja Umer Afzal, on behalf of Pakistan Gakhar Federation also received the guests and admired the potential efforts of DOAM and National Heritage and Culture Division for the preservation of Heritage in Islamabad. During the visit, the dignitaries reviewed the existing condition and heritage value of the sites and appreciated the efforts of the Department of Archaeology & Museums, Government of Pakistan, towards the documentation, preservation, conservation and promotion of the country’s archaeological and cultural heritage. The inclusion of Rawat Fort, Pharwala Fort and Mai Qamro Mosque and the Tomb of Sultan Muqarrab Khan on Pakistan’s UNESCO Tentative List represents an important step towards enhancing international recognition of the country’s diverse cultural heritage and reflects Pakistan’s continued commitment to safeguarding its heritage for future generations. The visit also provided an opportunity to reinforce cooperation between the Government of Pakistan and UNESCO in the fields of heritage conservation, documentation and sustainable management of culturally significant sites.
