Type: Monument - Tower
Province: Gilgit-Baltistan
District: Astore
Period: Historic
Relative Chronology: 19th Century CE
Description: Safaro Shikari originally had three floors. Only the ground floor, however, has survived vandalism, and the looting of wood. During its heyday, the top floor was used by guards to stand vigilant and undertake surveillance of the surrounding border area. Defense personnel lived on the second floor, ready for any defensive action, if need be, while the ground floor was used as a store for food and supplies. The tower is made of stone and wood, with layers of both materials alternating within the wall. There is no pillar at any level to support the structure of the ceiling.
