Hassanabad Shabaran (Polo Ground)

Type: Monument - Building
Province: Gilgit-Baltistan
District: Hunza
Period: Historic
Relative Chronology: 19th Century CE
Description: The Hassanabad polo ground was built in the second or third quarter of the 19th century CE, as a memorial for the numberdaar Yousuf Big. It was used to host polo matches, alongside other cultural activities, especially when the Mir of Hunza visited this locality during his hunting expeditions. This polo ground also assumes a great deal of religious importance for the local Ismaili Muslim community, as their Imam, Shah Karim Al - Hussaini, Aga Khan IV, visited this place in 1960 during a deedar with his followers. According to a credible local resource, the residual boundary of the Hassan Abad polo ground measures 125 x 13.7 m. This measurement now includes building encroachments in the form of a school and a hospital.
