Phuguch Mosque

Type: Monument - Mosque
Province: Gilgit-Baltistan
District: Darel
Period: Historic
Relative Chronology: 19th Century CE
Description: This mosque is situated in Phuguch Kot. It has nearly retained its original state, and shares aspects of its design with the Shaikh Dara Mosque in Duber valley. The verandah is unusually oriented towards the west, such that the mihrab (niche) of the mosque falls within the wall adjacent to the verandah - that is, on the same side as the main entrance to the prayer hall. The flat roof of the hall stands on three square pillars, of which the central one facing the mihrab is huge in size. Within this prayer hall is a fireplace, underneath a corbelled roof with a smoke escape in its center. The covered verandah has seven arched windows and one doorway, and five pillars placed centrally, which support the roof. The pillars have bracket capitals with at least three volutes on either side.
