Akbari Sarai and Mosque

Type: Monument - Sarai
Province: Punjab
District: Lahore
Period: Historic
Relative Chronology: 1526 - 1857 CE
Description: The Akbari Sarai features a monumental gateway that leads to the Tomb of Jahangir. From the structural evidence and the size of the bricks, it appears that the Sarai and the entrance gateway of the tomb were built simultaneously and were integral parts of the same building of Shahjahans period. The Sarai was meant for the wayfarers and also to accommodate the establishment looking after the tomb, but during the British period it was used as the manufacturing depot of the north-western Railway. An old mosque of the period of Shahjahan is also standing close to the Akbari Sarai.
