Tomb of Jahangir and Akbari Sarai & Mosque

Description

Tomb of Jahangir: The tomb of Mughal Emperor Jahangir is a single-storeyed square structure in plan, measuring 81.3m on each side and standing on a high platform. An arched verandah runs in front of the series of rooms and four vaulted bays lead to the central burial chamber. The entrance gate of the tomb is double storeyed, the exterior of which is decorated with inlaid geometric and floral design made in red sandstone panels. The half dome of the arch of the passage way shows honeycombed pendentives flanked by panels representing pinnacles and bunches of flowers. Akbari Sarai: The Akbari Sarai features a monumental gateway that leads to the Tomb of Jahangir. From the structural evidence and the size of the bricks, it appears that the Sarai and the entrance gateway of the tomb were built simultaneously and were integral parts of the same building of Shahjahan’s period. The Sarai was meant for the wayfarers and also to accommodate the establishment looking after the tomb, but during the British period it was used as the manufacturing depot of the north-western Railway. An old mosque of the period of Shahjahan is also standing close to the Akbari Sarai.
