Description


Since his joining B.A. Class in Government College, Lahore, Allama passed most of his life in Lahore. His first residence was at bhati Gate from 1900 to 1905. In 1922 he shifted to Mcleod Road and stayed there up to 1935. In 1934 Allama Iqbal purchased a plot of land measuring about 3500 sq.m, situated in Mauza Garhi Shahau, Mayo Road (Allama Iqbal Road). On completion of the house at the site at a cost of R.s 42025/- Allama Iqbal shifted from McLeod Road residence to this house in May, 1935. A rent deed of Rs. 50/- P.M. was signed by Dr. Iqbal in favour his son Javed Iqbal on 21st May, 1935 for use of the front four rooms which remained under his use till his death. It was here that his wife Sardar begum, mother of Javed Iqbal, died on 24th May, 1935. It was also here that Allama Iqbal passed his last three years and breathed his last on 21st April, 1938 in his bedrooms. Keeping in view the significance of the building it was converted into a historic House Museum where the relics of the great Philosopher Poet of the East re properly preserved and projected for public view.
