Thareli Buddhist Remains

Description


One of the most impressive Buddhist sites of Gandhara region is Thareli which is situated about 5 km north-west of Jamalgarhi in the district of Mardan. This Buddhist settlement derives its name from a nearby perennial spring. Though known to the archaeologists since the 19th century, excavations at Thareli were started by the Japanese Archaeological Mission in close collaboration with the department of archaeology. Pakistan in 1964. During the three seasons of excavations in 1964, 1966 and 1967, a large and extensive Buddhist establishment including the main stupa which is by the spring on the northern side and other building remains lying on the various spurs. All the buildings are made of diaper masonry.The main stupa of Thareli is surrounded by a large number of votive stupas and the main body of the stupa is provided with niches for the reception of Buddhist sculptures.
