Garhian (Lal Chak Stupa Monastery)

Description

Lal Chak is the local name given to a group of four small mounds situated close to the Sirsukh site in the north-east corner. These four mounds covered the remains of a small and unimportant Buddhist settlement comprising stupas, shrines and monasteries dating from the third or fourth century CE. the best preserved among them is a little monastery in the northern part of the site. It is standing to a height of between 2 and 2.25 m above the ground level and contains the indication of some chambers. To the south-east of this monastery and about 35 m distant from it is a stupa standing in the middle of a rectangular compound. The stupa is square in plan with a broad flight of steps on its northern side.
