Description

Choukhandi type of necropolis of pyramidal shape are mostly reported in Baluchistan and Sind. In Baluchistan, the groups of such type of graves are reported at Hindian, Ras Malan, Agore (Hingol River) and Kandiwari in Lasbela. In sind, the groups near Karachi are commonly known as choukhanid and Baluch tombs. Since the architectural style of these graves is quite different from the common graves, it has drawn the interest of many scholars regarding their history and art. Bhawani Sarai graveyard is located north of Karachi on Karachi - lasbela Road and 8 km from Hub Chauki and mile-stone 20 near Bahawani Sarai. The graves are located on the right side of the road while going to Bela and on a raised ground, 3 m high. They cover an area of 107 m north-south and 73.1 m east-west. The graves are in ruins and covered with thorny cactus bushes. Dislocated stones are lying in the graveyard only at certain points. Tombs are exactly in the same pyramidal shape as those of Choukhandi tombs. The stone used is yellow is and-stone. The graves are constructed in the form of hollow oblong vault-like chamber. In this necropolis the male grave can be identified by the presence of a boss shaped stone on the top and there is only one grave standing in tact with this feature.
