Site of Ancient City (Bhera)

Description

Bhera is situated on the left bank of River Jhelum in District Sargodha. At this point the two great routes of the salt caravans diverge to Lahore and Multan. Here was the capital of Sophytus, the contemporary of Alexander. From here the enterprising Bahar initiated his invasion of the sub-continent and it was here that the great Sher Shah Surri founded a walled town with eight imposing gates in the year 1540 CE. The boundary of the walled city runs round a radius of about 3.2 km with as many as 8 gates providing approach to the residential area of the town. These gates have mostly been reconstructed during the middle of the 19th century by the district authorities. However, three gates still retain some original elements and features, one of the gates (Gulabi Gate) is now completely missing. Another one (Kabuli Gate) has been drastically renovated so much so that its shape has altogether been change.
