Kot Diji Fort

Description

In the last quarter of the 18th century Mir Fateh Ali Khan Talpur shifted his capital from Khudabad to Hyderabad and divided his kingdom into seven states. Major part of Khairpur division fell to the share of Mir Suhrab Khan the great grandfather of Mirs of Khairpur. He established his headquarter at Kot Diji and built this fort. It is situated on a high mound to the west of Kot Diji town, a strategic position of the hillock of which three sides are scraped almost perpendicular, while on the east side the ascent is extremely steep guarded by strong defenses. The fort can be approached through three strong gateways in the east on different terraces. A pavilion built in beautiful cut stone work command the east defenses and was probably the seat of Nawab. The semi-circular bastions were commanded with heavy guns of which only a brass gun known as Mariam remains there.
